Back to the Neon Shadows

My Swedish friend Freddie (Fredrik Keith Croona) has resurrected his dark synthwave project Terrorbit — and I had the pleasure of playing guitar on two tracks from the new EP, fittingly titled Resurrection: “Shinjuku Vampire” and “Neon Blood.”

I was already part of Terrorbit’s first era (see posts here and here), and it felt great to be invited again.
Synthwave is quite foreign territory for me — far from the world of metal riffs and textures I usually live in — but that’s exactly why I enjoy these collaborations so much. They open new perspectives, challenge the way I think about sound, and remind me that there’s always something to learn when you step outside your comfort zone.

Thanks for having me again, Freddie. This one truly bleeds neon. ⚡️

Sonic Poetry: My Contribution to Eth Eonel’s Sonnet

Music has always been a bridge between minds and emotions, and I recently had the opportunity to contribute to a project that embodies this idea beautifully. I collaborated with the incredibly talented Norwegian singer and songwriter Eth Eonel, who is crafting a multi-part musical piece titled Sonnet.

My guitar playing is featured in the second movement of this composition, a piece that seamlessly blends progressive sensibilities with deep emotional expression. Eth Eonel’s vision brings together elements of metalalternative music, jazz, and intricate harmonies, creating a soundscape that is both captivating and thought-provoking. It was an inspiring challenge to add my own sonic voice to this rich musical tapestry.

If you’re looking for something truly immersive, I highly recommend checking it out. You can listen to Sonnet 2 here:

Expanding Horizons: My Latest Musical Collaborations

As I continue making steady progress with guitar recordings and programming for my new album, I find myself drawn to exploring creative outlets beyond my own project. While my solo work remains a top priority, I’m also engaged in several exciting musical collaborations that push me beyond my comfort zone and into new sonic territories. These ventures aren’t limited to metal – just like last year, I’m stepping into different musical landscapes, embracing fresh challenges that fuel my growth as a musician.

One such collaboration is with the incredibly talented Norwegian singer Eth Eonel, who is composing a multi-part musical piece titled Sonnet. My guitar playing will be featured in the second movement of this composition, which blends progressive sensibilities with deep emotional expression. It’s a thrilling challenge to weave my sound into this intricate work, and I’m eager to see how our styles merge.

Another project, still in its early stages, reunites me with my longtime friend and collaborator Ana Lyr. After working together on our cover of Nevermore’s The Sorrowed Man, we’ve set our sights on reimagining another classic—this time, Falling Again by Lacuna Coil. Ana will bring her signature vocal style to the track, while I take on the instrumental arrangement, mixing, and mastering. As a longtime admirer of Lacuna Coil, reinterpreting one of their early songs feels like a heartfelt tribute to a band that has profoundly influenced me.

Additionally, I’ve embarked on another cover project with Fati Urbán, an exceptionally gifted singer and a dear friend with whom I’ve collaborated before. Together, we’re crafting our own rendition of Aphélium by Platon Karataev, a standout band from the Hungarian acoustic music scene. This project allows us to experiment with new sonic textures while paying homage to a group that has made a lasting artistic impact.

Each of these collaborations presents unique challenges and fuels my own creative evolution. They open doors to fresh perspectives and new dimensions in my music, continuously enriching my artistic vision. I can’t wait to bring these projects to life and share them with all of you!

Transforming Nevermore: A Unique Rendition of ‘The Sorrowed Man’

Nevermore’s music has always had a profound impact on me, with a special emphasis on The Sorrowed Man, one of the most remarkable tracks from their In Memory EP from 1996. While this lyrical piece, with its depth and atmosphere, might not entirely stand out from the band’s classic themes – given that Nevermore’s timeless legacy includes numerous heavy and atmospheric tracks – The Sorrowed Man offers a unique contrast to the 90% of their repertoire that is rooted in progressive and power metal intensity. As one of my favorite bands, I’ve long wanted to pay homage to their work with my own interpretation.

Finally, the moment has arrived. Together with the amazing French vocalist, Ana Lyr, we’ve created our own rendition of the song. Throughout the arrangement process, we aimed to preserve the original vibe while allowing Ana’s emotive vocals to add a uniquely intriguing layer to the track.

The video is now available on both of our YouTube channels. If you love Nevermore, or you’re just in the mood for some special atmospheric music, check it out and let us know what you think!

Duo Latera: Eraser (feat. Darkwave) – Thrash Metal Riffs and Melodic Solos

I added my guitars and bass to one of the songs of a great EP initiated by my friend, Fredrik of the excellent blackened death metal band Against I. The project entitled Duo Latera is basically a collaborative effort of five metal musicians (Fredrik, plus Chronicler of Ardul, MIND:FIELD, Embers Ignite and myself). The debut EP (Destructor) consists of four tracks, of which I play the guitars and bass on the third one. The music you can hear on the EP combines the stylistic elements of various metal subgenres (progressive, death, thrash, etc.), creating an exciting mixture that stretch out the borders of these already well-defined subgenres. The third song (the one I take part in) entitled Eraser is a combination of thrash-based riffs, melodic solos that fill up the entire duration of the track and powerful death metal growls. Check it out please – and don’t forget to listen to each tracks, featuring different musicians with different approaches and visions!

Guest Guitar Solo on Terrorbit’s “20XX AD” EP: Synthwave Fun

I had the chance to add a guitar solo to one of the tracks of the new Terrorbit EP entitled 20XX AD. As you know, Terrorbit is a darksynth/synthwave/cyberpunk band from Sweden, and I already had the honor to be a guest musician on one of their earlier releases (in two songs on From Beyond the Rave – for further details, see my earlier post here). Although their current release is slightly different from their earlier EPs (as it includes hints of synthpop and several vocal parts), the album fits well into Terrorbit’s rapidly growing discography. You can hear my guest guitar solo on the fourth track entitled Dreams in Binary (around 2:14 – to open it in Spotify, click here. You can also listen to the song on Bandcamp by clicking here). It was such a great fun to add my personal shades and emotional colors to this amazing synthwave song – a genre that’s otherwise not something that I’m really familiar with. To look into an almost unknown musical world and get involved in a creative process that’s so different from my own is certainly an effective way to widen a person’s inner horizon. While writing and recording the guitar solo, I definitely intended to stay inside the musical world and tonal characteristics of the 80’s with the aim of implementing my own personal style within the framework of the song. What do you think of the overall result – do you think I grabbed the essence of the track and added something personal to it?

The links to the full album are here (Spotify) and here (Bandcamp). Give the EP a listen, if you want to hear quality synthwave stuff!

Current Collaborations: Exploring New Sonic Horizons!

Lately, I’ve had the honor of contributing to some truly amazing musical projects, spanning a variety of genres and styles.

Terrorbit – Retro Horror Synthwave Meets Guitar Fury

I had the pleasure of adding my guitars to two tracks on Terrorbit’s latest album – a dark, retro/synthwave masterpiece inspired by the eerie aesthetics of ‘80s horror movies. If you love cinematic synths with an edge, this one’s for you! You can check out the album on BandcampYouTube, or Spotify. My contributions can be heard on Track 2: Ghost and Track 6: Emptiness.

Da J – “Come Alive” (Dubstep/EDM/Bass Music)

Yes, you read that right—I ventured into the electronic music scene! I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate on “Come Alive”, a high-energy single by Da J, a top-tier producer in the dubstep/EDM/bass music world. If you’re wondering what a progressive/thrash metal guitarist is doing in this genre, just hit play and you’ll get it! You can stream “Come Alive” on Spotify and Apple Music.

Combstead – “Line In The Sand” (Heavy Metal Instrumental)

It was also a privilege to work on Line In The Sand, an epic instrumental track featured as Track 8 on Combstead’skiller album Road We Travel On. This record is packed with incredible guitar work, and I’m beyond honored to have been part of it. You can stream the full album on Mark’s SoundCloud!

Huge thanks to Terrorbit, Da J, and Combstead for letting me be part of their artistic vision. Each of these collaborations has been an exciting challenge, and I can’t wait for you all to hear them! Let me know what you think!
