“The David Lynch of Metal Records” – New Review on Thanatology!

I am thrilled to share an incredible review of Thanatology from The Sounds Won’t Stop, which hails the album as a “wild instrumental explosion” and “the David Lynch of metal records.”

The review praises Thanatology for its blend of heavy rock, progressive, and experimental elements, creating a cinematic and intense sonic journey. According to the reviewer, from the atmospheric opener The Last Wasted Dawn to the unpredictable Legacy of the Worthless and the epic closer Farewell Before Sunset, the album bursts with intricate textures, relentless energy, and masterful guitar work. Drumming and percussion are described as “crazy,” driving the songs forward while pushing musical boundaries. Melodic metal influences intertwine with a cinematic undercurrent, best appreciated with headphones to catch every detail. The reviewer highlights the guitar work as “some of the best lead guitar stuff I’ve heard in a long time,” with each track showcasing a different approach to shredding, from blistering solos to softer, melodic buildups. The production is also praised for its attention to detail while retaining raw energy. The integration of organs and keys with aggressive guitar work further enhances the album’s distinctive style.

The Sounds Won’t Stop urges listeners to experience Thanatology in full, as only a complete playthrough reveals its full potential.

Experience this sonic journey for yourself – play it loud!

You can find the original text of the review here. For the sake of convenience and safety, I also copy it here:

An EP release from Darkwave has a wonderful way of delivering a soiree of edgy and heavy rock tonalities that blend in with a progressive and experimental undertone and hits loads of metal elements along with plenty more but does this all with the focus on some intense and brilliantly performed guitar work.

The Thanatology EP does indeed showcase some vast undertones and cinematic backbone as it comes in with the first track called “The Last Wasted Dawn” which has an atmospheric feel and starts getting more and more intense as it plays on but, throughout all of this you have rampant and wild, experimental approaches,  riffs, and even layers of textures that come at you from left and right.

This is an intense but brilliant way to start the record because it introduces you to some of the soundscapes that you were going to hear throughout the full release.

You do have key and synth work in there, crazy percussion, and the whole thing just bursts with energy non-stop.

As the record unfolds you get more influences coming into play. The drumming and percussion throughout this record is crazy and really helps the drive for a lot of the songs so that they’re able to push the envelope the way they do.

You can certainly hear a lot of different kinds of melodic metal as an influence on this project but there is a ton of that cinematic feel as well so you do get a more expansive underbelly half the time.

There are layers to these songs and some of the best ways to listen to them or with headphones so you can pick up on all of that.

One of the most wild tracks on the record which is also one of my favorites is called “Legacy of The Worthless” and this displays a unique approach to the keys and the synth tones and performances along with how certain tracks can build in different ways.

Each of these songs comes with a bit of a rambunctious style and attitude in a way.

What really hits hard about these tracks is not just the arrangements and how outside the box some of these songs can come through. It’s really the guitar playing. This is a showcasing of some intense and unbelievable guitar work that really shows how the artist is able to pull together eclectic songwriting and have diversity all within a single track but also his guitar work.

This is some of the best lead guitar stuff that I’ve heard in a long time and every single song shows that a little differently. There’s a bit of a different approach but always a shredding and blisteringly intense sound on the guitar.

Of course, you have a lot of melodic and softer sections too that service comes before the storm or let’s songs exhale back down to a certain point.

Again, I love the vastness in the undertones of a lot of these.

The production is amazing and you can tell there was tons of attention to detail paid during the creation of these songs but it never loses this sort of character that it begins with in the first place which may even be the most important part of the entire thing.

I love the fact that organs and keys come into play and are just as chopped up and thrashy as some of the guitar work is.

This was something displayed very well on the closing track called “Farewell Before Sunset” which definitely served as an excellent closer to the record.

There are tons of harmonies, amazing melodies that come and go, thrashing metal rhythms and time signatures, endless energy, plenty of charisma, and if you are a guitar player, you absolutely have to listen to this record.

It will blow you away.

This was an absolute metal soiree that came through as a sort of wild instrumental explosion.

This was the David Lynch of metal records.

Amazing work all throughout and something you should listen to from beginning to end. Listening to one track may give you an idea of what you can expect, but it won’t give you the full spectrum of what the EP has to offer as a whole.

Listening through from beginning to end as an absolute must if you love metal or great guitar work in general.

Check this record out and experience it loud.

Behind the Mic: My Experience on the Emptyspiral.net Podcast

The Emptyspiral.net podcast, hosted by the fan site dedicated to Lacuna Coil, is a unique platform for fans of the band, featuring news, discussions, and special interviews. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to appear as a guest on the show’s 167th episode, where I shared what it means to me to be a fan of such an amazing band.

During the discussion, I talked about how I first discovered Lacuna Coil’s music and the profound impact their art has had on me. Their musical world has not only been a source of inspiration but has also fostered a sense of belonging to a community, something that Emptyspiral.net continues to strengthen.

I’m deeply grateful that I also had the chance to talk about my own musical journey. I introduced my solo project, Darkwave, which creates instrumental progressive thrash metal. We explored the history of Darkwave, from its beginnings to my most recent album, Thanatology, which was released in 2024 in a special remastered CD format. Towards the end of the conversation, I also gave a brief teaser about my upcoming material, which will feature vocals for the first time.

In the final part of the podcast, all four of us shared our thoughts on the title track of the 2022 Lacuna Coil release entitled Comalies XX, which led to some fascinating insights.

This interview was a truly special experience for me, offering the chance to express what Lacuna Coil’s music means to me. Having the opportunity to discuss Darkwave at the same time was a tremendous honor, and I’m incredibly thankful to Matt, David, and Mike, the podcast hosts, for making it possible.

Rewriting the Past, Composing the Future: My 2024 Recap

Here we are again – just weeks away from bidding farewell to 2024! And, as usual, I can’t resist the urge to subject you all to my long annual summary. Brace yourselves! 🙂

This year felt different from the last few. Unlike 2021, 2022, and 2023, I didn’t release a new album in 2024 – but I promise, I had a good reason! Instead, I poured my heart and countless hours into refining my past work. I didn’t just remix and remaster all my previous albums – I also re-recorded significant parts, especially basslines. It was a monumental effort, taking months to complete. But the result? A completely revitalized discography. The updated tracks are now live on Spotify, Bandcamp, and Soundcloud, offering a far superior listening experience.

And that’s not all! I also ventured into the physical realm with the release of Thanatology on CD. Some of you may already have that long-awaited tangible piece in your hands! This project wasn’t just about improving sound quality – it was about laying a rock-solid foundation for the future. Like turning the last page of a chapter in a book, it felt essential to close this one properly before moving forward.

2024 was also the year of collaborations for me, and what a ride it’s been! I had the honor of contributing as a guest musician on two Terrorbit releases (first, second), a stellar dubstep/EDM track by Da J, one of the debut songs from the phenomenal Duo Latera metal project, and the latest album from Combstead. Even as I write this, more exciting collaborations are in progress. I can’t share too many details just yet, but trust me – what’s coming is worth the wait!

As for my own music, the past few months have been dedicated to writing and recording new material. While I’m not ready to reveal much, I can tell you that some massive ideas have already taken shape. I’m working hard to turn them into a cohesive string of songs. For me, an album isn’t just a collection of tracks – it’s a unified story, an entity with its own soul. That’s why I’ve resisted the urge to release singles piecemeal. I’d rather present you with something whole, something meaningful. So, thank you for your patience – I promise it will be worth the wait!

Here’s to the journey so far and to the exciting chapters still ahead. See you all in 2025!

From Digital to Tangible: Thanatology in CD Format

The moment I’ve been waiting for has finally arrived: my third album, Thanatology, has been released in physical format! I must admit that it’s been a long and windy road. The album has been released as an independent production with only 100 copies available, with a lot of hard work and effort – but exactly because of that, it fills me with exceptional joy that I can finally hold my latest release in my hands as a CD.

The first physical release of an album is always a significant milestone in any musician’s life and career. In a world where digital platforms dominate, holding our own music in a tangible format like a CD or vinyl means more than just a product. It’s a symbol of the passion, work and enthusiasm that went into the songs. Personally, it gives me a sense of accomplishment and permanence. Something physical always feels more ‘real’ and lasting than a few sound files uploaded onto a nameless server at an unknown place. From now on, Thanatology exists in the world beyond just the digital realm!

Darkwave Reloaded: All Albums Remixed & Remastered on Bandcamp!

Hello friends!

Big news: all three of my albums have been completely remixed, remastered, and even partly re-recorded to sound more powerful and alive than ever before! I’ve replaced the original files on Bandcamp, so if you’ve downloaded my albums before, make sure to grab the latest versions – you’ll definitely hear the difference!

This is the best sound I’ve ever achieved, and I truly hope you’ll enjoy it! Thank you so much for your support, and happy listening!

Zsolt

Back in Business: Darkwave Remixed & Reinvented!

Some of you might have thought I had vanished – maybe even stopped making music altogether. But nothing could be further from the truth! While I haven’t been as active here as before, I had a damn good reason for it. Over the past few months, I’ve been completely immersed in remixing and remastering all my previous albums, diving deep into an intense online mixing course, and battling through the inevitable trial-and-error process that comes with learning sound engineering on your own. Trust me, it was a long and exhausting ride!

But now, it’s done. And the result? In one word: BRUTAL. After months of experimenting with new guitar and bass tones, tweaking drum samples, and refining my mixing techniques, Hexapla, Missa Innominata, and Thanatology now sound massively different from their original versions. Of course, I won’t be the one to tell you whether it was worth the wait – that’s for you to decide.

One big change you might notice: Hexapla – The Remasters (my 2022 remix/remaster) is no longer available. Why? Because I’ve completely reworked the original Hexapla from the ground up, making the older remaster obsolete. But aside from that, all my previous releases are still there – now with significantly enhanced sound quality.

So, do me a favor: head over to my Bandcamp page, crank up the volume, and experience the new, upgraded Darkwave sound for yourself!

Thank you for being part of this incredible musical journey!

Another amazing review!

metal-digest.com, “The Normless Music Magazine” wrote an amazing review on Thanatology!

„Zsolt Némthy’s one-man instrumental Metal project Darkwave bring an EP of chunky riffage, mellifluous keyboard stabs and pads and tonalities from here, there, and everywhere. This Hungarian multi-instrumentalist takes the concept of soundscaping further than almost any of his peers, and uses the furious guitar lead in lieu of vocals. You may argue that’s nothing new or extraordinary, but what there is sounds amazing (he self-produces too) and is quite beautifully written and played. Yes, there is a Proggy indulgent side, and a couple of tracks feel a little overlong. You’ll forgive that quite easily as overall this is a strong and entertaining EP.„

A huge milestone!

In a poll that received over 1,000 votes, readers of the excellent Metal Has No Borders webzine voted on their favorite metal releases of 2023. The voting started on the 18th of November and ended on Christmas Eve. It is my distinct pleasure to share the amazing news: Thanatology received Bronze Tier in the poll for Readers’ Metal Album of the Year!

Right now I’m speechless. It is not very often that a self-released album of an independent musician receives such an enormous recognition – and now I feel extremely honored and grateful! Let, therefore, my first thoughts fly to all those who believed in me and voted for Thanatology. Thank you for your enormous support: not just for voting on my latest release, but also for encouraging and helping me all along the way! Music is basically a special and intimate form of interpersonal communication – therefore it would be meaningless to create a sonic framework to transmit feelings and thoughts without the circle of those who listen to it. Thank you for keeping company and travelling with me on this amazing journey!

Also, thank Metal Has No Borders for the opportunity, and their appreciative words on my album: “”If King Crimson had formed in modern times with an instrumental agenda for prog-thrash, the result would be the right brain freakout titled Thanatology. Zsolt Némethy commands the one-man project, Darkwave, into the arena of symphonic, experimental, atmospheric, and neo-classical shred” (click here for the original entry on metalhasnoborders.com)!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

The long annual summary post

I know that nobody reads long posts anymore, but I can’t become a person who I’m not: I am simply unable to put a text together out of five concise sentences. So, please bear with me – my usual long annual summary post will follow.

2023 has been a wild ride to me. I managed to release Thanatology, my third full-lenght album (regardless that Spotify notoriously keeps calling it an EP…). Believe me, I poured all my heart and soul – and also a huge amount of time, practice and effort – into it. I know that I’m some kind of a perfectionist – and perfectionism is often considered to be a two-edged sword. Besides composing, recording and programming all the tracks, I spent countless hours with learning how to mix and master a decent metal album. Not gonna lie, the result turned out much better than I expected – Thanatology sounds clearer and more natural compared to the first two releases. Still, there is always a place for further imporvements (says the perfectionist…) – so I decided to remix all my releases before re-issuing them on physical CDs in the near future. This is the most important activity that keeps me busy these days. So please keep an eye on this website and/or my socials if you’re interested in getting physical Darkwave goodies (CDs and – hopefully – some merch, too).

Thanatology received extremely good feedback: it was favorably reviewed not only by people who listened to it, but also by metal webzines – metalhasnoborders.com even listed it among the best albums of August, 2023! (Just a side note: to tell the truth, this was absolutely unexpected to me! My focus has always been on creating something meaningful and to connect with people who resonate with my musical experimentation. Therefore, the possibility of being mentioned together with important players of the modern metal scene never occured to me. To see Darkwave on the same page with Crypta, Angra or Brujeria is really an amazing honor!). Right now, Thanatology is on the third place in a poll at metalhasnoborders.com for the best metal release of 2023 (the final results will be announced in early January) – who could have imagined such an enormous success a couple of months ago? I certainly didn’t, that’s for sure.

To cut a long story short, it seems that Darkwave finally stepped through the shadow line, if you know what I mean. I could continue writing about the main events of 2023 for hours, but the release and favorable reception of my beloved Thanatology fills my thoughts with pride, joy and thankfulness. I – of course – have plans that will provide me enough work for at least a decade, but I already summarized them elsewhere. Therefore, let me finish this lenghty annual summary post with a word of gratitude. Darkwave is surrounded by the love and support of a circle of good friends and supporters, and I am extremely grateful for each and every one of you for being here and encouraging me! A musician without listeners would be nothing more than a bizarre manifestation of a dead end.

Thank you for being with me in 2023! I just have one simple request: please never forget about me! 2024 will be another fascinating year for Darkwave, and I can’t wait to see, what the future holds for us!

Spotify results

It seems that Thanatology performs quite well on Spotify. Look at those numbers below!

Never forget that YOU made it possible. And please always remember, how grateful I am for your constant support and encouragement! Thank you so much, my friends!
